Xvid Download

xvid downloadXvid download is an open source video compression and decompression program. The word “codec” is short for compressor/decompressor. In a nutshell, the Xvid codec tells a media player how to “read” a video in a particular format. Xvid is a continuing project developed by volunteer programmers from all over the world. Like the commercial DivX codec, Xvid download uses the MPEG-4 standard. Unlike DivX, however, Xvid is free to download and free to use. It is under the terms of the GNU General Public License.

Xvid Download – Issues

The Xvid download and installation process is pretty straightforward, but occasionally you may run into problems. We have compiled a list of Xvid codec download issues below and their corresponding workarounds. It is by no means an exhaustive list, and you should consult the main Xvid FAQ page for more information.

Xvid Download – Common Installation Errors (Windows)

1. Corrupt installer and incomplete installation

When trying to install the program, this error appears: “The installer you are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete.” Interrupted downloading can corrupt files and cause incomplete installation. Make sure your internet connection is stable and try to download the file a second time. Also try downloading an alternative Xvid download version.

2. Error opening file for writing

Installing the Xvid codec gives an error that the installation program cannot create files in the Windows system directory. For those with Xvid.ax already installed, the problem may be caused by a read-only file. It’s also possible that the codec is being used by another program. The workaround is to close all programs before installing the codec and to remove the old Xvid.ax file manually before installation.

If this is the first time you are installing Xvid download, the error may be caused by admin restrictions. You need special privileges to create files and update files in the Windows system registry. Run the file as admin or contact your system administrator.

3. Code 5 error: Delete file failed

The Xvid installer cannot delete in the Windows system directory. If you have already installed Xvid.ax, again, the problem may be caused by a read-only file or the codec is being used by another program. Close all programs and remove the old Xvid.ax file before installing the new file. If you are installing Xvid for the first time, the error may be caused by admin restrictions. Run the program as an administrator or contact your system administrator for help.

Xvid Download – Playback Issues

xvid download freeXvid, as long as you download it from a trustworthy source, is very safe to use (read our article: Is Xvid Safe? if you want to find out more about this) but there can be couple of common problems that can occur when using it.

1. Xvid movies do not play

Xvid movies will not play if the download is incomplete or truncated. It’s easy to tell if the video download is complete if you use a torrent client, as the stats are all there. If you don’t have file stats, download GSpot to open the movie and check the details.

If the download is complete and the video still does not play, the required codecs may not be installed in your computer. Go to the download source to find out which audio/video codec you need for playback, and download that codec. If you have all the required codecs but still can’t play the video, the codecs may be broken. First, try playing another video. If that works, then the problem is with the movie, not the codec. If other videos don’t play, you need to reinstall the Xvid codec. First, uninstall all previous versions of Xvid download from your computer. Then our homepage and download the latest version for your operating system. Install the program and test your videos.

Missing picture and no video. When there is audio but no video, the required video codec may not be installed in your system. Try using GSpot to identify the exact codec needed, and then download and install this codec.

2. Distorted picture

Video distortion usually happens when you play an Xvid movie that is encoded with a newer version of the Xvid codec that is installed in your computer. To fix, uninstall all previous versions of the Xvid codec and reinstall the latest version.

3. Skipping video and audio

The most common reason for skipping video/audio is slow computer processor speed. Try lowering your screen resolution and closing all other running programs. Also try using the VLC media player. It supports nearly all video codecs and is free to download and use without needing to mess with Xvid download.
